As this commentary was inspired by a FB Friend’s post, I am supplying context below all as they topic unfolds.

The words echoed by Rick Rozay Ross were music to my ears when he stated “If it takes Meek Mill to draw this attention, we gonna use Meek Mill to draw this attention, but it’s gonna speak for so many others.

Meek Mill is officially the poster child for the injustice carried out by this country and in this instance the criminal justice system. Many don’t like it…. I say get over it- because it ain’t about you.

Rosa Parks wasn’t always the civil rights favorite poster child either. There were other before her and after but she was the one, the face of a movement.

It ain’t really about Meek Mill either, because this situation will likely yield more record and merchandise sales equaling more deposits in his plush bank account.

This isn’t about being accountable.

This is about equality!

This is a about making a change. We can’t continue to just go along to get along, in hopes that you or i, or our children or our love ones aren’t caught up in the system.

For me, it’s to late, my family and likely yours too have already been caught up in the spider web like trap of the system. The trap that will let you believe you are getting out and than they drag you right back in.

It hurts!

It hurts immensely!

Not just for those locked up, but for the family members who are trying to hold it together and continue to live a life without their love ones.

It was great to see all the youth rallying and chanting #FreeMeekMill…. but I couldn’t help but think what’s NEXT?

More than likely Meek will have to sit down for at least a 24 month stretch.

It has to be long term in nature.

We rallying in Philly but what about Harrisburg where the legislature and Superior Judges don’t know about Meek Mill and honestly don’t care about Black Men & Women general.

Harrisburg is where they make the actual laws for the state of Pennsylvania.

Are we going to get Political?

If Rick Ross would have said that he and the hip hop community were going to put there money to hire lobbyists to work both sides of the aisle (Republican & Democrat) to get new laws introduced, I would have cried.

I am there with you with regards to equity and fairness of sentencing. However; For mE and many, many others it is about accountability, and the message the lack there of sends to our young people. To dismiss our opinions regarding accountability and/or brand us as only being concerned with Meek is unfortunate. Most of the folk I speak with agree its totally not about Meek. I feel yelling Meek Mills should go free means there should be no accountability for repetitive violation of rules you agreed to.

Let mE ask you if a white person robs my mom at gun point in May and gets probation and a black guy robs my mom at gun point in October and get 1 year should I scream hey that’s not fair let the black guy off on probation too. Or should I say hey that not fair lock both of them up that robbed my mom?

Approximately 60% of Pa inmates are black. There is something structurally wrong with that.

If you want to miss this opp to galvanize and really organize than I don’t know what to tell you.

From my perspective, Meek Mills is not a good example of the high number of black men and women behind bars.

Charles Carlies No. That’s not what put him on probation. That’s how his probation was violated. That is what I am asking you. What crime are you referring too?

People are easily ignoring how he got on probation in the first place. That’s the crime is convicted of. Popping a wheelie is how he violated his probation.

Mitchell Swann he was convicted of drug and gun charges. His original sentence was 11 – 23 months with 5 years probation. He served about 6 months and then was paroled and placed on 10 year probation. I believe the reason was because of concerns raised about the negative impact of a lengthy jail time on his growing music career. He has violated his parole at least 2 times since that release prior to the recent ‘sentencing’. He had been warned about the consequences of violation prior to the recent ‘re-sentencing.

So the source of his original probation were the gun and drug charges.

Kevin Ghee The question of does he belong in jail now is an unfair question in that if he violated probation the answer is yes if that’s the penalty. Now should it be 2-4 yrs? That’s a bit excessive. So popping a wheelie wasn’t the charge. What was he charge with, reckless endangerment or the like? What was it?

M. Swann – K. Ghee I think it might have been 7 – 8 months. varying accounts.

C. Camp The point is there is no mechanism and the system needs to be fixed. It’s either, or. So in an either, or scenario the answer is no.

And it’s exactly why this isn’t about accountability but more about a system that is culturally and economically insensitive on its best days and archaic and punitive on its worst.

First you have to understand a few things. We were never free. We actually were free once slavery was abolished but for civil rights we gave it up to be equal.
Look up civil rights. It doesn’t exist. Civil rights is when you voluntarily give up your natural rights and accept privileges given to you. All courts are based on the constitution there is no court for natural rights. But we did this to ourselves on many levels. We elected officials who reacted to political pressure and enacted laws that netted everyone for anything. Since then it’s snowballed.
The Jim crow laws are still on the books and since the 3/5 clause was never removed we get caught up.
This is deeper than meek but he’s not the right candidate to bring attention.
We need to challenge the laws. City municipal state federal and the constitution itself.
Do you realize jurisdiction is based on consent? No court has jurisdiction if you are under duress or coerced. But when summoned you are under duress by threat of incarceration.
Every law contradicts another law in application and wording.
In Meeks case he’s not innocent but if the judge is sentencing him for violations she excused or knew of through prior correspondence she’s wrong.
But you need to ask why with so many blacks as judges lawyers politicians, why is this still happening?
Since we talking Philly because of meek we need to vote every incumbent out of office in every elected office and repeat the cycle. That will enact change because people won’t have careers,the laws will have to change.

1. We can wait forever for the perfect “injustice candidate” or we can grab this right here in front of us

2. In some ways, it is better and more powerful to use a flawed victim than if say Camari was wrongfully imprisoned. If justice is real then it must protect ALL, not just the “good guys”

This is my beef with Gitmo but I will save that for another thread

Our actions must be short-term, intermediate, and long-term

SHORT
As mentioned above, protest injustices, get strong “Coard-like” defense teams whenever possible

INTERMEDIATE
Elect leaders who will fight injustice

LONG-TERM
Build wealth. The only thing that is truly going to stop the injustices against Blacks is signficant numbers of Blacks holding real wealth

James Brawner I disrespectfully disagree . We need to elect people who will not fight for change,rather enact change.
We need to change how we vote period. We need to create the criteria for candidates not let it be dictated.
We need to force a clause that permits a special election based in criteria we set to remove people before general elections.
We need to look up the FOP bargaining agreement to address cops. We need to change how elected officials are protected by sovereign immunity.
We need to change the entire system.
